Why Hot Water?

A warm or a hot shower on cold days or a relaxing time in a hot bathtub after a long hard-working day or on weekends is always pleasant. Electric Instant Geysers or Storage Water Heaters are a part of every household in modern times.

When it comes to heating water for a bath or in the kitchen, humans have come a long way in harnessing different forces of nature for that purpose. In ancient times, there were communal public hot water baths, saunas what we call them today. Then came the days where water used to be heated in big pots or drums using firewood and transported for bathing. Because of the difficulty in carrying hot water, firewood stoves were built inside the bathrooms but this posed health concerns because of smoke inside a closed environment.

With the discovery of electricity, a range of water heating systems was designed for ease of use and improved safety features. As modernization happened the models underwent upgrades, improving the efficiency, storage, and safety features.

Types of Electric Water Heaters

1. Immersion Rods / Heaters

Immersion Rods / Heaters

These were the initial designs where the rods are immersed in a container of water and connected to the electrical point, thereby heating the water. These rods are still in use and the easiest option if a person is living in a hostel or accommodation without mounted geysers. Easy to carry low-cost option.

2. Storage Water Heaters

The advancement in technology, demand for safety and efficiency, has resulted in the storage water heaters providing a constant flow of hot water. As the name suggests the water in the tank heats up when the system is turned on. This provides hot water for multiple people. As the hot water is used up, a constant inflow of cold water into the tank ensures the tank is never empty. The thermostat technology controls the switching on and off of the heating element, thereby providing energy saving and a constant water temperature.

Storage Water Heaters

These storage water heaters come in different capacities ranging from 10 litres to 50 litres. The inner walls of the storage tanks are lined with glass, titanium, glass wool or other materials which prevent the loss of heat from inside of the tank. The insulation inside the tank keeps the stored from cooling down faster.

3. Instant Geysers

As the name suggests, these are smaller in size and come in a capacity of 1 to 3 litres providing immediate hot water. There is no storage of water in these heaters. The cold water flowing in is immediately heated by the element and flows out. These instant heaters are handier in areas where there is not large usage of water. These are best used in kitchens.

4. Heat Pump Water heaters

Heat Pump water heaters move the available heat from the atmosphere and ground, with the help of a compressor to heat the water inside the tank. The heat pump compressor works just like the refrigerator compressor but in reverse. Heat pump water heaters are more energy-efficient and help to save electricity.

How to choose a Water Heater

While there is a range of water heaters available in the market, they may not necessarily suit everyone’s needs. As each household is different, the selection of the most suitable water heater would depend on their day-to-day hot water requirements. The following key points should be kept in mind while buying the right water heater:

  • The capacity and type of water heater: For large families, an instant geyser is not of any benefit. A storage heater is more of a requirement for everyone. Once the water is heated, there is a constant flow. Another point to take care of is the type of water heater. Horizontal or vertical type. According to the space and water system available, the best option can be installed for the trouble-free availability of hot water.
  • Efficiency: It is recommended to buy a water heater that has a higher star rating according to the BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency). Select a water heater that saves on electricity bills while providing hot water.
  • Safety against shocks: Most modern water heaters come with safety features like automatic thermostats, safety valves to release in case of excess pressure, and insulation against electrical shocks when using hot water. Do ensure that these safety features are available in the water heater chosen.
  • Water-Saving: The present-day water heaters retain the temperature of water for a long time and hence prevent wastage. They also help in energy saving.
  • Aesthetics: Along with energy efficiency, water savings and safety, the water heater should have a good aesthetic design to enhance the bathroom decor. Do choose a design that suits your interior decor.

A trouble-free bathing experience leaves one relaxed and rejuvenated. Hot water baths nowadays have become hassle-free and quick, and are available at the flick of a switch. Electric water heaters are a long-term investment that is necessary for your bathrooms. The one installed should be safe, trouble-free, elegant in design and within your estimated budget.
